Joi

Joi Bjorgvins, also known as Johann Bjorgvinsson, was born in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Joi’s creative self-expression started from a young age when he loved to experiment with creating, drawing and painting. As a teenager he went on to develop this through dance, training with the Royal Swedish Ballet School which led him to pursue a career as a professional dancer and performer.

Joi’s artistic flair naturally led him to the field of choreography at which point he relocated to London and collaborated with the renowned arts group SHUNT from 2006 - 2010, to craft numerous Visual Performance Installations with Curator Serena Bobowski. These often showcased the expressive use of paint, transforming white floors or walls into emotional expressions of colour and lighting adding a visual aspect as backdrops for the performances. He also expanded his work into set design, costume creation and even into the musical composition for his works.

In 2010, Joi shifted his creative energy from performance art to his original love which was painting, primarily using acrylics as his medium. Over the years, he has produced more than 50 pieces of art many of which are now in his Launch Collection. In autumn 2022, Joi took his skills further with private training from Oil Painting Master Apollon in Florence. There, he delved into the intricacies of oil painting techniques such as A la Prima and Layering. Since then, Joi primarily works with oil paints, occasionally incorporating acrylics into his pieces.

Joi's artistic approach revolves around starting with a blank canvas and a specific subject, be it a person, place, or animal, through which he channels the inner part without the outer layer and his unique vision. His artworks reveal the essence of the subject through vibrant shapes, colors, and brushstrokes. Emotions are a focal point, with the background often highlighting the connected emotions through a carefully chosen colour palette which creates a unique signature to his work.
